When
Sister Carmelita Grantz was living at the Ursuline Motherhouse, she
never thought she'd be happy in a licensed nursing facility. But when
knee replacement surgery and the realization that she wasn't moving
like she used to, she decided to move into Marian Home.
While she first resisted going, she found that the licensed nursing
facility operated by the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville was not what
she expected.
"I expected the place to be like a semi-hospital," said Sister
Carmelita. "Instead, I said, 'wow, is there life here!'
"There is always something going on. I was surprised at how much
activity there is."
Residents at Marian Home have the option to choose any number of activities,
including daily Mass, prayer groups, outings to Huber Farm, Churchill
Downs and Derby Dinner Playhouse, special parties, bingo, bunco and
bowling.
"I knew that moving here would be the end of my driving,"
said Sister Carmelita. "But they give me the option to go places
and even serve as chauffeur."
Once a volunteer at Norton Suburban Hospital, Sister Carmelita now volunteers
at Marian Home. One of her favorite activities is sitting with another
resident, trying to teach her to talk and interact again after years
of silence. And she is succeeding; after only a few months of trying,
this other woman now says a few words and even opens her eyes for Sister
Carmelita.
"I'm so active doing things here," said Sister Carmelita.
"I think it's so important to stay active. I used to worry that
I'd miss reading the paper if I moved here. But here, I don't have time!"
