Ursulines
remain active at Motherhouse
When
the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville first built the Ursuline Motherhouse
on Lexington Rd. in 1916, their ambition was great as they prepared
for a growing congregation.
Now,
as the Ursuline Sisters prepare for the future, they are looking
at the Motherhouse in different ways. In the words of Ursuline foundress
St. Angela Merici, "If, according to times and circumstances,
the need arises to make new rules or do something differently, do
it prudently and with good advice."
In
the early years, the Motherhouse was home to sisters who taught
on campus - the very sisters who built the Ursuline Campus into
what it is today. Over the years, the Motherhouse has also served
as a temporary home for the Ursuline Child Development Center, Ursuline
Sisters' offices and even refugees from the 1937 flood.
Even
after sisters retire from full-time ministries such as teaching,
they are still active, vital members of the community. Sisters who
retire to the Ursuline Motherhouse are active in many different
ventures. As we lovingly say, Ursuline Sisters don't retire - they
are recycled!
