The Mission of the Ursuline Sisters

The Ursuline Sisters of Louisville, Kentucky, an apostolic religious congregation of the Roman Catholic Church, rooted in the spirit and tradition of St. Angela Merici, are committed to a life of prayer and community and participation in the teaching mission of the Church.

Teaching Christian living is the corporate ministry of the Ursuline Sisters. This ministry, cutting across socio-economic, racial and national boundaries, assists women, men and children to live more fully and to develop a personal relationship with God.

The Ursuline Charism - special gift
The Charism of Angela and the Charism of the Ursulines of Louisville is a contemplative love of God and a resulting openness and eagerness to serve the needs of others.

Chapter of Affairs and Elections: A Time of Renewal and Change

The Ursuline Sisters of Louisville opened their Chapter of Affairs and Elections on February 29. It's a ttime of transformation that takes place once every six years. The Sisters returned home from their ministries across the country and Peru to attend the important event. They'll not only elect their new leadership team but determine their focus for the next six years.

The Sisters opened the 2008 Chapter with a special Mass at the Motherhouse Chapel.

Several of the Sisters are in discernment as they decide the next step in their journeys with God. “True journeys or pilgrimages are not places of destinations but rather life changing experiences,” said Sister Jean Anne Zappa, President of the Ursuline Sisters in her opening statements for Chapter.

Sister Jean Anne spoke about the future and the openness the Sisters must continue to have in understanding the needs of others, “Religious are not the only ones facing uncertain futures,” she said.

Several other Sisters spoke during Mass. Each emphasized the need for their fellow Sisters to look into their hearts for God, to serve the lord with gladness and open themselves to God's call even if they do not yet know where their ministry will take them.

Sister Jean Anne finished her opening remarks by reminding all in attendance that God was with them, “Place your hope in God. Have faith that God will never abandon you.”

Shortly afterward roll call began and Chapter was officially underway. It will continue all week long and close on Sunday, March 9.
