Sister M. Alfreda
Gurtis, OSU
January 29, 1909 - January 15, 2004

Sister M. Alfreda Gurtis, OSU, 94, died Thursday, Jan. 15 at Marian Home. She was an Ursuline Sister of Louisville for 77 years.

A Sacred Heart Academy and Ursuline College graduate, Sister Alfreda taught for 65 years at schools including Holy Trinity, St. Vincent de Paul, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Anthony, St. Aloysius, St. Rita, St. Elizabeth, St. Ann, St. Timothy and St. Clement. She also taught in Cumberland, Md., and Morgantown, W.V., and served as a tutor for the Ursuline Campus Tutoring Center.

Sister Alfreda is survived by her Ursuline family; nieces Sue Ann Schaefer, Kathy Hengstebeck, Mary Gurtis Rice, Nancy Gurtis, Sarah Gurtis and Betty Reuter; nephews Joe Gurtis and Edward Jolliffe; and friends Ken and Doris Dolle.

Her body is buried at St. Michael's Cemetery in Louisville.

Sister Helen Margaret
Schweri, OSU
September 28, 1909 - December 4, 2003

Sister Helen Margaret Schweri, OSU, age 94, formerly Sister Aquinas, died Dec. 4 at Marian Home. She was an Ursuline Sister of Louisville for 73 years.

Sister Helen Margaret was an educator for 44 years and taught at Ursuline College 18 years. She also taught at Sacred Heart Academy, the former Angela Merici High School, St. Boniface, St. Elizabeth and Ursuline Academy in Louisville, St. Mary's College in St. Mary, Ky., and schools in Peru, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. An author, she also served as a translator/writer for the Ursuline Archives.

Sister Helen Margaret is survived by her Ursuline family and nephews Raymond Bunch and Tim Schweri of Louisville.

Her body is buried at St. Michael's Cemetery in Louisville.

Sister M. Carol Kissel, OSU
February 24, 1913 - December 4, 2003

Sister M. Carol Kissel, OSU, age 90, died Dec. 4 at Marian Home. She was an Ursuline Sister of Louisville for 69 years.

Sister Carol taught for 47 years at schools including St. Elizabeth, Ursuline Academy, Presentation Academy and Sacred Heart Academy in Louisville. She also served as a tutor for 10 years at the Ursuline Tutoring Service.

Sister Carol is survived by her Ursuline family, nieces and nephews.

Her body is buried at St. Michael's Cemetery in Louisville.

Sister Cecilia Hatem, OSU
April 9, 1921 - November 23, 2003

Sister Mary Cecila Hatem, OSU, 82, (formerly Sister Henry Marie) died Sunday, Nov. 23 in South Carolina. She was an Ursuline Sister of Louisville for 47 years and a native of New Straitsville, Ohio.

Sister Cecilia was an educator for 43 years at schools including St. Vincent de Paul and St. Leo in Louisville and St. Aloysius in Shepherdsville. She also taught in Madison, Ind., and Columbia, SC.


Sister Cecilia is survived by her Ursuline family, a brother, Paul Hatem of New Straitsville, Ohio, and three nephews.

Her body is buried at St. Michael's Cemetery in Louisville.

Sister Mary Alban
Bosse, OSU

February 6, 1901 - November 2, 2003

Sister Mary Alban Bosse, OSU, 102, died Sunday, Nov. 2, at Marian Home. She was an Ursuline Sister of Louisville for 83 years.

Sister Alban served as a cook and worked in food service for 65 years at schools including Sacred Heart Academy, St. Elizabeth and St. Francis of Assisi, as well as the Ursuline Motherhouse. She also worked at schools in Ohio and Nebraska, and was active in convent duties at the Ursuline Motherhouse.

Sister Alban is survived by her Ursuline family, 4 nieces and 4 nephews.

Her body is buried at St. Michael's Cemetery in Louisville.

Sister M. Concetta
Waller, OSU

June 25, 1914 - July 29, 2003

Sister M. Concetta Waller, OSU, 89, died July 29 at Baptist Hospital East. She was an Ursuline Sister of Louisville for 69 years.

Sister Concetta, who earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from St. Louis University, served as the first full-time president of Ursuline College. Her appointment as college president marked the first time that the position was not held by the mother superior of the Ursuline Sisters.

Sister Concetta was also a chemistry professor at both Ursuline and Bellarmine colleges in Louisville and taught at St. Martin School and in Omaha, Neb. She also served as councilor and archivist for the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville.

She is survived by her Ursuline family and two sisters, Sister Mary Victor Waller, OSU, and Sister Rose Andrew Waller, SCN. She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Emma Waller, two brothers, Fathers Kenneth and Victor Waller, OFM-Conv., and two sisters, Agnes and Gertrude Waller.

Her body is buried at St. Michael's Cemetery in Louisville.

Sister M. Borromeo Walker, OSU
June 17, 1920 - May 24, 2003

Sister M. Borromeo Walker, OSU, 82, died May 24 at Marian Home. She was an Ursuline Sister of Louisville for 62 years.

An Ursuline College and Spalding University graduate, Sister Borromeo taught for 40 years at schools including St. Francis of Assisi, St. Raphael, Sacred Heart Academy, Our Mother of Sorrows, St. George, the former Ursuline Academy in Louisville, and Shawe Memorial High School, Madison, Ind. She also taught in Columbia, S.C., and Cumberland, Md.

In addition to her teaching career, she was a Pastoral Minister for St. Francis of Assisi Parish for 11 years, and worked for the Ursuline Sisters' Office of Development.

Sister Borromeo is survived by her Ursuline family and a sister, Agnes Broderick of Louisville.

Her body is buried at St. Michael's Cemetery in Louisville.

Sister Thecla Shiel, OSU
April 28, 1911 - May 16, 2003

Sister Thecla Shiel, OSU, 92, died May 16, at Marian Home. She was an Ursuline Sister of Louisville for 76 years.

An Ursuline College and St. Louis University graduate, Sister Thecla was a teacher for 53 years. For many of those years she was the Principal of St. Raphael, Our Mother of Sorrows and Our Lady of Lourdes in Louisville, and St. Francis de Sales in Morgantown, W.V.

A professor at Ursuline and Bellarmine Colleges, Sister Thecla co-authored and collaborated on several books. She also served as director of the Department of Education for the Ursuline Sisters.

In addition to her teaching career, she was the founder and first director of Christian Help, Inc. in Morgantown, W.V., and a parish minister at La Purisima Parish in Lompoc, Ca.

Sister Thecla is survived by her Ursuline family, a sister, Kitty Salucci of Lompoc, Ca.

Her body is buried at St. Michael's Cemetery in Louisville.
