Sister Eulalia Faller, OSU, age 102, died November 19, 2008 at Marian Home in Louisville, Kentucky.  She was born in Louisville and entered the Ursuline Community in 1922.

Sister Eulalia began her early ministries at schools in Louisville, Kentucky, including St. Peter, St. Boniface, Holy Spirit, St. Elizabeth, St. Vincent de Paul and St. Anthony.   She taught fifth and sixth graders at St. Francis of Assisi in Louisville from 1970 until 1972 and later served at St. Aloysius School in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, from 1972 until 1990, as first a teacher and then a librarian.  When Sister Eulalia retired she helped with hospitality for funerals until she was 95 years old and then continued her ministry through prayer.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, her niece and several nephews, and her Ursuline family.

Sister Marian Wolfschlag, OSU, age 88, died October 22, 2008 at Baptist East Hospital in Louisville, KY.  Sister Marian was born in Madison, Indiana, and entered the Ursuline Community in 1937.

Sister Marian was the principal of Sacred Heart Model School from 1963 until 1969 and again from 1972 until 1979.  Her ministry also included work as a Director of Personnel and Professional Development of the Ursuline Sisters in Louisville and a nursing assistant and later volunteer at Marian Home.  In addition, she served as a principal and teacher at schools in Columbia, South Carolina.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, and her Ursuline family.

Sister Ernestine Davis, OSU, age 88, died August 21, 2008 at Marian Home.  Sister Ernestine was born in Cumberland, Maryland, and entered the Ursuline Sisters in 1953.

Sister Ernestine taught at Ursuline Academy, St. Rita and St. Martin in Louisville. She also taught in schools in West Virginia for more than a decade and was the principal at St. Francis Central High School in Morgantown in the early 1980’s.  She worked at Bishop Walsh High School in Cumberland, Maryland, from 1985 until 1992 and taught at schools in Nebraska.

Sister Ernestine is survived by her sister Mary Ernestine Lohr of Cumberland, several nieces and nephews, and her Ursuline family.

Sister Mary Xavier Laemmle, OSU, age 99, died March 24, 2008 at Marian Home. Sister Mary Xavier was born in Louisville and entered the Ursuline Community in 1930.

Sister Mary Xavier taught at St. Peter, St. Rita and Our Mother of Sorrows schools in Louisville as well as Sacred Heart Academy and Watterson College. She also taught at Shawe Memorial High School in Madison, IN, St. Peter and Cardinal Newman schools in Columbia, SC, Bishop Walsh and St. Mary schools in Cumberland, MD, and Blessed Sacrament School in Omaha, NE, and St. Patrick in Sidney, NE. She worked in the Office of Ursuline Life for several years and moved to Marian Home in 2000.

Sister Mary Xavier was the 8 th child of 15. She is survived by her brother A.J. Laemmle, a resident the Little Sisters of the Poor, her sister Joan Riehl, who is at Franciscan Healthcare Center, numerous nieces and nephews and her Ursuline family.

Sister Anna Mae Johnston, OSU, (the former Sister Leoba), age 84 , died May 7, 2007 at Marian Home. Sister Anna Mae was born in 1922 and entered the Ursuline Community in 1942.

A speech pathologist, Sister was on the staff of the Ursuline Speech Clinic (1977-1996), Easter Seals of Louisville (1969-1971), and the Commission For Children With Special Health Care Needs (1971-1972). She also provided speech therapy under Title I for the Louisville Board of Education (1972-1975) and at Saints Mary and Elizabeth Hospital (1975-1976). As an elementary school teacher, Sister taught in Louisville at St. Therese, St. Boniface, Holy Trinity, Holy Spirit, St. Rita and Our Mother of Sorrows schools and in North Platte, Sidney and Omaha, Nebraska.

She is survived by two sisters, Rita Howell and Mary Hibbs, of Louisville, nephews and her Ursuline family.

Sister Mary Catherine Callahan, OSU (the former Sister Vianney), age 83 , died January 11, 2007 at Marian Home. Sister Mary Catherine was born in 1923 and entered the Ursuline Community in 1941.

She taught at St. Therese and St. Leo in Louisville. She also taught in Evansville, IN, Jackson, MS and Pittsburgh, PA.

She is survived by four cousins: Jane Perge, Alice Wilson, Rosemary Kullman and Sister Andrea Callahan, OSU, and her Ursuline family.

Sister Pius Wantland, OSU, age 77, died December 24, 2006 at Marian Home. Sister Pius was born in Louisville and entered the Ursuline Community in 1948.

She taught at Our Mother of Sorrows, St. Peter Claver, St. Leo, Holy Trinity, St. Therese and St. Helen in Louisville . She was principal at Most Blessed Sacrament from 1983-1985 and St. Timothy from 1985-1988. She also taught in Morgantown , WV , Cumberland , MD and Madison , IN. Her last ministry was at Marian Home as a Certified Nurse Assistant from 1988-1996.

She is survived by a sister, Margaret Stemle, of Louisville; and her Ursuline family.

Sister Donald Sinkhorn, OSU, age 89, died November 30, 2006 at Marian Home . Sister Donald was born in Louisville and entered the Ursuline Community in 1936.

She taught at St. Elizabeth, St. Peter Claver, St. Vincent de Paul, St. Boniface, Our Lady Help of Christians and St. Helen in Louisville . Sister Michelle Speckner, OSU, age 91, died October 22, 2006 at Marian Home. Sister Michelle was born in Louisville and entered the Ursuline Community in 1935.

Sister Conrad Mellon, OSU, age 86, died August 22, 2006 at Marian Home. Sister Conrad was born in Cumberland , MD and entered the Ursuline Community in 1937.

She taught at Holy Trinity, Sacred Heart Model School , St. Elizabeth, St. Boniface in Louisville . She was principal at St. Leo from 1961-1965 and principal at St. Raphael from 1967-1969. She also ministered in North Platte , NE , Columbia , SC , Cumberland , MD and Pittsburgh , PA.

Sister Conrad wrote a book in 1996 entitled “Father Knue 1878-1945: Man of Invincible Faith – He Always Found a Way.”

She is survived by a sister, Maxine Mellon Howser, of Cumberland, MD; many nieces and nephews; and her Ursuline family.

Sister Sylvia Schlegel, OSU, age 96, died June 12, 2006 at Marian Home. Sister Sylvia was born in Louisville and entered the Ursuline Sisters in 1927.

Sister Sylvia taught at St. Anthony, St. Helen, Holy Spirit, St. Vincent de Paul, Pope John XXIII, St. Elizabeth, St. Therese and St. Rita, all in Louisville.

She was principal at various local schools including St. Ann from 1951-1957, St. Clement from 1957-1960, Our Mother of Sorrows from 1960-1961 and St. Peter Claver from 1966-1967.

She also ministered in Burkesville, KY and Camden, MS.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Bernice Schlegel; three nieces, Judy Delph, Yvonne Steier and Joann Feger; two nephews, Harold Schlegel and John Birkenmeyer; and her Ursuline family.

Sister Jeanine Wolff, OSU, age 95, died June 9, 2006 at Marian Home. Sister Jeanine was born in Louisville and entered the Ursuline Sisters in 1946. She recently celebrated her 60 th jubilee.

Sister Jeanine taught at St. Vincent de Paul and St. Helen in Louisville and was a tutor at the Ursuline Tutoring Center. She also ministered in Madison, IN, Cumberland, MD and Morgantown, WV.

She is survived by five cousins, Rev. Bernard Rapp, Dorothy Bonn, Thomas Adams, all of Louisville; Richard Adams, of Gladstone, MO; Jack Adams, of Birmingham, AL; and her Ursuline family.

Sister Cyrilla Kaelin, OSU, age 93, died June 7, 2006 at Marian Home. Sister Cyrilla was born in Louisville and entered the Ursuline Sisters in 1932.

Sister Cyrilla was principal at various local schools including: the former St. Peter Claver (1950-1953), Holy Spirit (1953-1959) and the former St. George (1962-1968).

She also ministered at St. Elizabeth, the Ursuline Tutoring Center and in Jackson, MS and Conemaugh, PA.

Sister M. Wilma Breighner, OSU, age 89, died April 5, 2006 at Marian Home. Sister Wilma was born in Cumberland, MD and entered the Ursuline Sisters in 1937.

Sister Wilma was a speech therapist at the Ursuline Speech Clinic from 1978-1991, Jefferson County Public Schools from 1970-1978 and the old St. Anthony School. She also taught elementary students at Our Mother of Sorrows, St. George, Holy Trinity and St. Vincent de Paul in Louisville. She also taught at schools in Evansville, IN, Madison, IN and Jackson, MS.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Breighner; and four sisters, Sister Theodora Breighner, OSU, Sister Helen Breighner, OSU, Rose Milburn and Irene Abbott.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, Helen  (Mike)  Eder, William Breighner, Margaret Breighner, Reverend Joseph Breighner, David Abbott and Rose Marie Amtower; and her Ursuline family.

Sister M. Laurence Jacobs, OSU, age 97, died January 2, 2006 at Marian Home. Sister Laurence was born in David City, NE and entered the Ursuline Sisters in 1933.

Sister Victor Waller, OSU, age 88, died December 24, 2005 at Marian Home. Sister Victor was born in Louisville and entered the Ursuline Sisters in 1936.

Sister Delia Lynch, OSU, age 98, died December 9, 2005 at Marian Home. Sister Delia was born in Frostburg, MD and entered the Ursuline Sisters in 1926.

Sister Florita Kastner, OSU, age 96, died October 28 at Marian Home. Sister Florita was born in Cumberland, MD and entered the Ursuline Sisters in 1930.

Sister Rosemary Van Ausdale, OSU, age 83, died October 20 at Marian Home. Sister Rosemary (formally Sister Norma) was born in Akron, Ohio, and until entering the Ursuline Sisters in 1939, lived in Cumberland, MD.

Sister Rosemary ministered at St. Therese, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Elizabeth, St. Helen, Holy Trinity and Holy Spirit schools in Louisville and also taught in schools in Madison, IN, Omaha, NE, Columbia, SC and Cumberland, MD. She was a dedicated Marian Home volunteer.

She is survived a sister, Norma Lee Corwell, of Ridgeley, WV; several nieces and nephews; and her Ursuline family.

Sister Rosamond Besendorf, OSU, age 87, died Oct. 6 at Marian Home in Louisville, Ky. Sister Rosamond was born November 14, 1917 in Louisville. She was received into the Ursuline community in July 1938.

As an educator, Sister Rosamond ministered in several schools in Louisville, including St. Therese, Ursuline Academy and Sacred Heart Academy. She also taught at Ursuline High School, Columbia, South Carolina; St. Francis de Sales, Morgantown, West Virginia; and St. Patrick, North Platte, Nebraska.

She is survived by a brother, Joseph Besendorf; nieces Mary Wesley Mason and Geraldean Gratzer; nephews Drew Besendorf, Philip Besendorf, Robert Gratzer and Gary Gratzer; and her Ursuline family.

Sister Helen Breighner, OSU, age 94, died August 12 at Marian Home in Louisville, Ky. Sister Helen (formally Sister Ludgera), was born March 9, 1911, in Cumberland, MD. She was received into the Ursuline community in July 1926.

As an educator and musician, Sister Helen ministered in several schools in Louisville, including Sacred Heart Model School; Ursuline Academy, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Joseph, St. Elizabeth and the Ursuline School of Music. She also taught at St. Patrick in North Platte, NE; Blessed Sacrament in Omaha, NE; St. Patrick in Sidney, NE; St. Francis de Sales in Morgantown, WV; St. Mary in Cumberland, MD; and Saint Peter and Paul in Cumberland, MD.

She is survived a sister, Sister Wilma Breighner, OSU; several nieces and nephews, Helen  (Mike) Eder, William, Margaret, and Reverend Joseph Brieghner, David Abbott, and Rose Marie Amtower; and her Ursuline family.

Sister George Marie lived a long and fruitful life in the service to God and to all who crossed her path. As an Ursuline Sister, educator and principal, she encouraged those in her care to be and do their best. Her concern and respect for others was evidenced by her gracious hospitality, her willingness to accept a person just as they are and her sincere gratitude for all that was done for her.

Sister George Marie taught in several schools in Louisville, including Sacred Heart Model School; Ursuline College where she served as Dean; and Sacred Heart Academy where she was principal for 10 years. She also taught in other schools throughout the country. She was principal of St. Michael and Shawe Memorial, both in Madison, IN.

She is survived by her Ursuline family, a niece Eithne McMullen and several great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Sister Mary Samuel Carter, OSU, age 93, died May 17, 2005 at Marian Home. She was born October 20, 1911 in Columbia, SC. She entered the community in July 1941.

Sister Samuel began teaching in 1941 at St. Elizabeth in Louisville. She taught at various schools including Sacred Heart in Conemaugh, PA; St. Francis de Sales in Morgantown, WV; Saint Peter and Paul in Cumberland, MD; St. Joseph and St. Rita in Louisville; Saint Mary and Michael in Madison, IN; St. Patrick in North Platte, NE; and St. Peter in Columbia, SC. Sister Samuel also ministered to the sick and elderly at St. Jerome and St. Leonard, both in Louisville.

She is survived by two brothers, William Carter, of Columbia, SC and John Carter, of Lexington, SC; several devoted nieces and nephews, and her Ursuline Family.

Sister Loretta Burch, OSU, age 85, known to her nieces and nephews as “Aunt Lottie,” died April 29, 2005 at Marian Home. She was born August 12, 1919 in Louisville, KY. She entered the community in July 1937.

Sister Loretta began teaching in 1939 at St. Boniface in Louisville. She taught at St. Vincent de Paul, Our Lady of Lourdes, Sacred Heart Model School, and Saint Joseph, all in Louisville. She was principal at Our Lady Help of Christians and Sacred Heart Model School, both in Louisville and was principal at Pope John XXIII in Madison, IN. She began her work with the Ursuline Speech Clinic on the Ursuline Campus in 1980.

She is survived by several devoted nieces and nephews.

Sister Mary Jude Adams, OSU, age 94, died March 17 at Marian Home. She was born May 11, 1910 in Louisville, KY. She entered the community in August 1930, making 2005 her 75 th anniversary year as an Ursuline Sister.

Sister Jude was a teacher for 69 years. She taught at St. Raphael from 1956-1959 and 1972-1996. She also taught at St. Elizabeth, St. Joseph, St. Boniface, St. Ann, St. Vincent DePaul, St. George, Sacred Heart Model School, Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Mother of Sorrows, Holy Trinity, and St. Timothy, in Louisville, KY; and St. Boniface in Evansville, IN.

She is survived by a sister, Florence Adams Larkin, several nephews and nieces, and her Ursuline family.

Sister Elena Becker, O.S.U., 90, died Nov. 2 at Marian Home. She was an Ursuline Sister for 60 years.

An educator for 54 years, Sister Elena ministered at St. Anthony, St. Vincent de Paul, St. Leo and Sacred Heart Model School in Louisville, St. Mary and St. John Neumann schools in Cumberland, Md., St. Mary School in Jackson, Miss., St. Joseph and Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament schools in Pittsburgh, Pa., Conemaugh Catholic School in Conemaugh, Pa., St. Peter and St. Joseph schools in Columbia, S. C., and St. Francis de Sales Elementary School in Morgantown, W. Va.

She is survived by her Ursuline family, nieces and a nephew.

Her Funeral Mass is 10:45 a.m. Nov. 5, Marian Home, 3105 Lexington Rd., building 2. Visitation is 2-7 p.m. Nov. 4 with a wake service at 7 p.m., Marian Home, 3105 Lexington Rd. Burial at St. Michael’s Cemetery.

Sister M. Angelice Seibert, O.S.U., 82, died Oct. 19 at Marian Home. She was an Ursuline Sister for 64 years.

Sister Angelice served as president of Ursuline College in the 1960s until it merged with Bellarmine College (now Bellarmine University) in 1968 and was president of the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville from 1980 to 1988.

A graduate of Ursuline Academy, she graduated summa cum laude from Ursuline College, earned a Master of Science degree and Ph.D. in biochemistry from the Institutum Divi Thomae in Cincinnati, and was a Damon Runyon Postdoctoral Fellow in Cancer Research at St. Louis University.

While on the teaching staff of Ursuline College she was chair of the Division of Natural Science and director of Research, and executive secretary for Development and director of College Relations. She was a Fulbright-Hays Lecturer in biochemistry at the University of Galway, Ireland (1968-69) and a visiting professor of biochemistry at Smith College, Northampton, Mass. (1969-70). In 1970 Dr. Seibert was chosen to organize and develop the Division of Allied Health Professions at Jefferson Community College.

In 1979 she was named a Fellow in the Department of Health, Education and Welfare of the U.S. Government and assigned to the Manhattan, N.Y. office. In 1988 she was appointed a visiting scholar at the Pope John XXIII Medical/Moral Research and Education Center in Braintree, Mass. Sister Angelice also lectured and published extensively in the area of bio-medical ethics on the local level, across the United States, and in Canada and Ireland, and was a consultant in medical ethics at Marian Home.

Sister Angelice served on the Louisville Archdiocesan Women’s Concerns Committee and was a member of the boards of Highlands Court Apartments, Birthright and the Ursuline Center, Pittsburgh. She was a member of the Brookland Commission of Washington, DC; and a trustee of the College of New Rochelle (NY), Bellarmine University and St. Mary’s College, St. Mary, Ky. She was a co-founder of the national Ursuline Companions in Mission.

Various local organizations recognized Sister Angelice for her contributions to science and education. Bellarmine University named her Alumna of the Year in 1980, awarded her an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters in 1992 and recognized her as “President Emeritus” in 1995. She was the YWCA’s Woman of the Year in Education

(1976) and the recipient of the Dr. Albert Schweitzer Award from Right to Life of Louisville (1983). She also was chosen a Woman of Distinction by the Center for Women and Families (1992), and received the Tower Award for Women Leaders in Science and Health Care from Presentation Academy (1998).

She is survived by her Ursuline family, her sister, Margaret Lincoln, and nieces and nephews.

Visitation is Oct. 21, 2-7:30 p.m. with a wake service at 7:30 p.m. and Funeral Mass is Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. at the Ursuline Motherhouse, 3115 Lexington Rd. Burial at St. Michael’s Cemetery.

Sister Mary Frances Nolan, OSU
January 7, 1913 - October 7, 2004

Sister Mary Frances Nolan (the former Sister Magdala), OSU, 91, died Thursday, Oct. 7, at Marian Home. She was an Ursuline Sister of Louisville for 73 years.

Sister Mary Frances ministered as a music teacher for 46 years, 11 of those years at the Ursuline School of Music. She also taught at St. Rita, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Elizabeth, Sacred Heart Model School, St. Vincent de Paul, St. George and St. Francis of Assisi in Louisville, as well as at schools in Shepherdsville, Ky., and Omaha and North Platte, Neb. She also served as Diocesan Music Supervisor as well as mistress of postulants and clerical assistant with the Office of Finance and Administration within the Ursuline community.

Sister Mary Frances is survived by her Ursuline family; a cousin, Dennis Nolan of Algonquin, Ill.; and a friend, Ursuline Associate Mary Jean Kempf of Louisville.

Visitation is Oct. 10 from 1 – 7 p.m. with wake service at 7 p.m., Marian Home, 3105 Lexington Rd.; Funeral Mass is Oct. 11 at 10:45 a.m. Burial at St. Michael’s Cemetery.

Sister M. Elizabeth McMannon, OSU, 88, died Sunday, May 30, at Marian Home. She was an Ursuline Sister of Louisville for 60 years.

Sister Elizabeth served 27 years of her 56-year teaching career at St. Raphael School in Louisville. She also taught at St. Anthony, St. George and Holy Spirit in Louisville, as well as at schools in West Virginia, Indiana and Pennsylvania.

She is survived by her Ursuline family, and two sisters, Elizabeth McMannon of Louisville and Sister Dorothy McMannon, OLVM, of Columbia, Ky.

Visitation is June 2 from 2 - 7 p.m. with wake service at 7 p.m., Marian Home, 3105 Lexington Rd.; Funeral Mass is June 3 at 10:45 a.m. Burial at St. Michael's Cemetery.

Sister Mary Cordula Dewig, OSU

Sister Mary Cordula Dewig, OSU, 82, died Thursday, April 1 at Marian Home. She was an Ursuline Sister of Louisville for 65 years.

During her 54-year ministry in education, she taught at Most Blessed Sacrament, St. John Vianney, Our Lady Help of Christians, St. Rita and Holy Trinity, as well as the former St. Peter, St. Elizabeth and St. Leo schools in Louisville. She also taught in Indiana and Nebraska, and served as a tutor for the Ursuline Tutoring Service.

Sister Cordula is survived by her Ursuline family; sisters Mary Dick, of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Sister Mary Boniface Dewig of Tichfaw, La.; and brothers Hugh Dewig of Albuquerque, N. M., and James Dewig of Evansville, Ind.

Visitation is April 5 from 2 - 7:30 p.m. with wake service at 7:30 p.m., Ursuline Motherhouse, 3115 Lexington Rd.; Funeral Mass is April 6 at 11 a.m. Burial at St. Michael's Cemetery.

Sister M. Emmanuel Eisert, OSU, 88, died Sunday, Feb. 15 at Marian Home. She was an Ursuline Sister of Louisville for 66 years.

An Ursuline College graduate, Sister Emmanuel was an educator for 54 years, teaching at St. Anthony, St. Therese, Our Mother of Sorrows, St. Elizabeth, St. Rita, St. Raphael, Holy Spirit and St. Mary schools. She also served as principal at St. Ann School and as librarian at St. John Vianney School. She also taught at schools in Maryland and Mississippi. She most recently served as a librarian at the Ursuline Motherhouse.

Sister Emmanuel is survived by her Ursuline family, brother Robert Young and nieces and nephews.

Her body is buried at St. Michael's Cemetery in Louisville.

Sister Mary David Hawkins, OSU
October 11, 1914 - January 31, 2004

Sister Mary David Hawkins, OSU, 89, died Saturday, Jan. 31 at Marian Home. She was an Ursuline Sister of Louisville for 71 years.

Sister Mary David was a teacher for 35 years, teaching at Holy Trinity, St. Martin, St. Boniface, Holy Spirit and Our Lady of Lourdes in Louisville and at schools in Jackson, Miss.; Cumberland, Md., and Morgantown, W. Va. She also served as librarian at Sacred Heart Model School for 17 years, and was treasurer at the Ursuline Motherhouse and cashier at Sacred Heart Model School.

Sister Mary David is survived by her Ursuline family; sisters Jessie Hanagan of Silver Springs, Md., Hazel McGuire of Towson, Md., and Hilda Shriver of Temple Hills, Md.; and nieces and nephews.

Her body is buried at St. Michael's Cemetery in Louisville.

Sister M. Adeline Bryan, OSU, 94, died Monday, Jan. 26 at Marian Home. She was an Ursuline Sister of Louisville for 77 years.

Sister Adeline served nearly 20 years of her 58-year teaching career at St. Ann School in Louisville. She also taught at St. Peter, Holy Trinity, St. Vincent de Paul, Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Mother of Sorrows and St. Frances of Assisi in Louisville, Pope John XXIII in Madison, Ind., and at schools in Cumberland, Md., and Camden, Miss. She also served eight years as a tutor for the Ursuline Tutoring Service.

Sister Adeline is survived by her Ursuline family, five nieces and four nephews.

Her body is buried at St. Michael's Cemetery in Louisville.

Sister M. Alfreda Gurtis, OSU, 94, died Thursday, Jan. 15 at Marian Home. She was an Ursuline Sister of Louisville for 77 years.

A Sacred Heart Academy and Ursuline College graduate, Sister Alfreda taught for 65 years at schools including Holy Trinity, St. Vincent de Paul, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Anthony, St. Aloysius, St. Rita, St. Elizabeth, St. Ann, St. Timothy and St. Clement. She also taught in Cumberland, Md., and Morgantown, W.V., and served as a tutor for the Ursuline Campus Tutoring Center.

Sister Alfreda is survived by her Ursuline family; nieces Sue Ann Schaefer, Kathy Hengstebeck, Mary Gurtis Rice, Nancy Gurtis, Sarah Gurtis and Betty Reuter; nephews Joe Gurtis and Edward Jolliffe; and friends Ken and Doris Dolle.

Her body is buried at St. Michael's Cemetery in Louisville.
