A History of the Ursuline Sisters' Amazing Journey of 150 Years of Ministry.

The Ursuline Sisters began their ministry in Louisville, Kentucky in 1858 when three sisters from Straubing, Germany, led by Mother Salesia Reitmeier, answered a call to teach at St. Martin School. Within two weeks of their arrival, the sisters were teaching 50 students. Soon a convent and boarding school on Chestnut Street near Shelby followed and the Ursuline Sisters were asked to staff other schools. In 1881, 20 schools were in the care of the growing community of 108 sisters. By the 1960's, there were over 650 sisters serving in 13 states and in Peru, South America.

Today, Ursuline Sisters minister in 11 states and in Peru. They serve as teachers, administrators, in healthcare, pastoral and social service ministries.

In 2008, the Ursuline Sisters celebrate 150 years of ministry and continue their mission of teaching Christian living and assisting women, men and children to live more fully and to develop a personal relationship with God.

The Angela Merici Center is an inter-faith center for spirituality and wholeness. The center offers individual and group space, rituals and programs that will enrich, nurture and help reclaim a sense of Spirit in today's hectic world.

In The News:
Campus Smokestack Comes Down

The Ursuline Campus smokestack was demolished in a most unusual way. A demolition ball was attached to a special twin-bladed helicopter which then swung the ball into the tall building. The ball slowly chipped away at the smokestack until it was nearly three-fourths of the way gone. The bottom portion will be removed using land equipment.

The smokestack and maintenance shop it sat on were taken down to make way for a new gym as part of the Ursuline Campus Schools' construction project. The demolition of the smokestack was funded by the Ursuline Sisters.

The building was once used to heat the Motherhouse and several more buildings on campus and was later used as a maintenance shop. The helicopter used to take down the smokestack is one of only 23 in the world and can carry up to 6,000 pounds of weight. To see more photos from the demolition click here.

Balloon Glow & Race A Success!

Balloons Prepare to Take Flight for Race

For two days the Ursuline Campus was filled with people celebrating
the Sisters' 150th anniversary. On Friday, August 1 hundreds of people attended a concert on our front lawn and stuck around to watch a balloon glow that was parred down because of weather.

Crowds Enjoy The Food During the Friday Evening Concert

The next day early risers got a rare treat. They watched as 14 balloons lifted off from the Sacred Heart Hockey Field while some of the crowd who stayed behind actually got a chance to go up in a tethered balloon. To read more about the event and see more pictures from the events click here.

Social Concerns: Taking on Torture

More than two dozen people, including Ursuline Sisters and area residents, took part in a one hour prayer vigil at the Motherhouse Chapel on Saturday, June 28 to express the religious community's resolve to end torture.

It was also meant to provide a reminder of the shame of torture as government policy and about the role of religious people in speaking out on this issue

The event was part of a nationwide demonstration during the month of June, which is torture awareness month. A Kentucky Sister founded the organization that helped organize the vigils and demonstrations across the country. To learn more about her story click here.

The Ursuline Sisters of Louisville were recently profiled on KET2's "Louisville Life" program in connection to their 150th anniversary. See the story by clicking here.
